The Inspiration behind the FAHMIDA BEGUM FOUNDATION

Mrs. Fahmida Begum Rashid Sheikh is the inspirational figure behind the formation of Fahmida Begum Foundation and the mother of its founder members. She was a pious and sincere lady who helped people whenever she could and taught the same to her children. Following her teachings, her children established the foundation in Karachi to help the disadvantaged.

Mrs. Fahmida Begum departed from us in 2014, leaving an exemplary legacy of dedicating one’s self for the help of others. The foundation will keep on working upon the vision of Mrs. Fahmida Begum till the eradication of poverty and homelessness in our society.

Fahmida Begum Foundation aims to be among the top welfare organizations of Pakistan in few years. The organization will help the needy and underprivileged section of the society to grow, prosper and contribute towards prosperity of the society and betterment of the country

The organization carries the purpose of reducing the gap between the privileged and unprivileged, rich and poor, upper class and lower class by helping the lowest section of the society to fulfill their needs and get a chance to upgrade their social status.

Fahmida Begum Foundation is a non-profit, privately owned welfare organization. Established in 2014, with the purpose of supporting and helping the deprived, Fahmida Begum Foundation has come a long way and made a positive mark through a number of initiatives.

In its early days the organization focused on street kids ages 5-12 who had never been to school before. Providing them a Playground and Activity Centre under the umbrella of Fahmida Manzil.

To see a smile on a child’s face by providing them green space where they can fulfill their dreams, whether it is at the playground or gaining knowledge. Providing them with a safe environment and guided by our trained staff and monitors, who are well versed in English and Urdu. The Activity Centre provides academic classes, range of activities, toys, story time and play dough seems to be their favorite.

Boys of course love racing cars play cricket basketball, football and egg and spoon race thrills all.

We are amazed at our girls who do not want to be left out at anything love sports and of course dolls too.

Bicycles are provided for all age groups. It is like EID when they are Cruising on their bikes. Love the   kid’s enthusiasm. Over the previous three years, the Centre has hosted an average of 150 children every day for a range of activities. Providing access to high –Quality educational provision is core to the Foundation’s approach. At the heart of the foundation’s services is the recent opening of the Fahmida Manzil Primary School provision for 4/5years old. The foundation has employed experienced teachers to ensure these young people get the best possible start to their education.

The School has opened with 49 Students and the aim is to increase this. In addition the foundation’s own school it supports education through the following schemes.

Scholarship:  

Mainstream: The Foundation Supports 40 children to enable them to attend the Mehran Government School. Tuition Centre was setup for their entrance exams success.

Special Needs Education. SEN:

The Foundation currently supports 5 Children’s to attend ABSA School and College for the Deaf.

In the future those who do not demonstrate an academic potential will be moved to vocational training.

*The Foundation vision is that disadvantaged communities have access to resources they need to flourish as educated economically active and valued members of society at the heart of the Fahmida Begum Foundations approach, therefore is not to provide short term palliative support to the under privileged but to put in place a physical Centre around which to put in place the infra-structure necessary for the poor of the community to flourish on a long term sustainable basis.

The foundation mission is to provide the resources and facilities for the under privileged essential for them to Live active and productive lives which Includes an Activity Centre, Education, Housing, Food, clean drinking water and other essentials healthcare & Vocational Training.

Fahmida Begum Foundation has a dedicated support team driven by her four children. The Trustees, are visionaries, with a proven track record of sustaining improvement. Each Trustee has an accountability and works with the ground force in order to nurture, support and guide them to maintain Fahmida Begum Foundation standards.

They set goals for the Fahmida Begum Foundation and review the results the board wishes to achieve. They set out priorities in the light of community needs and expectations. During their regular visits they monitor that the policies are implemented in an effective manner so as to achieve intended outcomes. They draw up policies on ground realities that guide the administration and other employees to achieve FBF goals. They interact with the public so as to get a firsthand idea of their educational, medical, relief and welfare needs.

They plan ahead to keep up the positive image of school in the eyes of the people of the community and ensure that education is given a high priority at FBF.

On their visits they communicate with all regulatory boards of government to ensure that the voice of the local community is heard and work towards bringing a change in the lives of the people.

The Trustees visit are always awaited and welcomed by all beneficiaries.

Mohammad Saeed Sheikh

Not amongst us anymore, Mr. Saeed Sheikh (Ex Vice President) served the foundation wholeheartedly till his demise and his services took us where we stand today. In his lifetime, Mr. Sheikh had worked with the British Army and Pitney Bowes in Nairobi before migrating to Pakistan in 1949, where he operated a business dealing in iron & steel and chemicals. After his retirement at 61, he spent the rest of his life in Canada, where he continued his support and sponsorship for FBF and many other welfare organizations.

Sheikh Idris

Dr. Sheikh Idris

Mr. Sheikh Idris is a medical practitioner. He has been in the profession for past 48 years. Having acquired multiple qualifications from prestigious institutions in UK and USA, he has earned a name in the industry as a distinguished practitioner specializing an aesthesia. An honorary fellow of the Royal College of Medicine England, Mr. Sheikh is a dedicated philanthropist and an important member of our organization.

Rukhsana Sheikh

Mrs. Rukhsana Sheikh

Mrs. Rukhsana Sheikh has an impressive portfolio of charity and services to the society. An ardent speaker for women’s rights and a patron of vocational training center, she is the chief sponsor of COSARAF Foundations Grant to Fahmida Begum Foundation. Apart from philanthropist services, Mrs. Sheikh has worked as a teacher, beauty therapist, medical secretary and an investor in Caretech Community Services Ltd.

Naureen Sheikh

Mrs. Naureen Sheikh

A retired teacher and thinker, Mrs. Naureen is a resident of London, from where she participates in a number of societal projects like this one. She is specifically well-versed in educational B-Ed in Social Biology from the London University in 1983. Throughout her life, she has had the experience of residing in different cities including Harare, Cape Town and London.

Haroon Sheikh

Mr. Haroon Sheikh

The CEO of Caretech plc and a London University graduate, Mr. Haroon Sheikh is an important part of the Fahmida Begum Foundation. He is a noted entrepreneur, philanthropist and figurehead of the community. Notable achievements include the 2008 Coutts Family Business Prize. Moreover, Mr. Haroon is an enterprise fellow of the Prince’s trust.

Saba Sheikh

Mrs. Saba Sheikh

Mrs. Saba Sheikh is a mother of five children and is involved in running an Islamic School that she has founded. She has been involved with a number of charity events like Charity Right, International Food Programme, the National Zakat Foundation, the Ummah Welfare Trust and Human Relief Foundation. She is a passionate philanthropist and actively participates in different initiatives aimed at societal well-being.

Farouq Sheikh

Mr. Farouq Sheikh

Mr. Farouq Sheikh is the Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Caretech Plc. He is a renowned investor, entrepreneur and philanthropist in the UK.  Mr. Sheikh has received recognition from Laing and Buisson, Coutts Bank and Ernst & Young. He regularly participates in healthcare conferences to raise awareness regarding learning disability. He is an enterprise fellow of the Prince’s trust and a member of the Mosaic National Advisory Board.

Akbar Sheikh

Mr. Akbar Sheikh

A seasoned entrepreneur and philanthropist, Mr. Akbar Sheikh is a principal within the Sheikhs Holding Group. Prior to this, Mr. Sheikh has had an illustrious career in the real estate industry and has delivered projects worth above £120m. He has studied at prestigious institutions including University of Warwick, Wharton Business School, China Europe International Business School and the University of Cambridge. A recipient of Next Generation Entrepreneur of the Year 2014 by Ernst & Young, Mr. Sheikh also holds an illustrious portfolio of philanthropic activities and services to the community. He is an enterprise fellow of the Prince’s trust.
